Custom Shades: Level I

Thursday, June 20 - Saturday, June 22, 2024 at Workroom Tech in Tryon, NC.

9:00 am - 5:00 pm with 1 hour lunch on your own.

In this class you will learn the fundamentals of sewing several styles of custom, soft shades. Students will complete three class projects; 1) a basic, lined Roman shade with Vako 20.04 lift system, 2) blackout, interlined roman shade with ribs on the Couliss cordless spring lift system and 3) a lined, stationary relaxed roman shade. Students get to see and try a variety of shade operating systems.

Class size is limited.  Each student with have their own 5' x 10' worktable, industrial straight stitch machine and tools.  Students bring face fabric.  All other materials and supplies are included (including lift systems).

  • calculating yardage
  • figuring lift lines and folds
  • linings
  • shade supplies and resources
  • corded window covering standards and safety
  • best practices for selling corded window coverings
  • hemming and finishing techniques
  • shade lift systems
  • professional tips


Students must have completed Introduction to Sewing Soft Furnishings and have some sewing experience and practical knowledge.


*Shade fabrication methods at Workroom Tech have been independently tested by Bureau Veritas, and approved to meet current industry standards for cord safety as set in ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2018 – American National Standard for Safety of Window Covering Products.

  • Students will bring their own face fabric.  All other tools, materials and supplies will be provided by Workroom Tech.  Once your payment has been processed, you will receive an email with yardage requirements and other information for attending this class.

  • There is a $75 cancellation fee for any class that is cancelled more than 3 weeks before the start date.  

    If cancelled less than 3 weeks before the class start date, there is no refund but the student can reschedule and select another class, space permitting.
