Learn Two Essential Slip Seat Techniques from Working Professionals

Slip seats are one of the most practical skills in furniture reupholstery — and one of the most requested. In this hands-on class with Jonathan Bennett and Mimi Owaske, you'll learn to build two different styles of slip seat from start to finish, using professional workroom tools and techniques. No prior sewing or upholstery experience is needed — this class is designed to welcome complete beginners while still challenging more experienced students with new methods. After class, you'll leave with two sample slip seats for your own future reference.

Jonathan and Mimi bring complementary expertise to the classroom, guiding you through the construction choices — from padding to fabric tension — that separate a seat that looks handmade from one that looks professionally done.

Class Projects

  • A flat slip seat built on a solid board, with pull-over fabric finished at the edge (no springs)
  • A webbed slip seat with a box cushion top, finished with welt

What You'll Learn

  • Building a flat slip seat over a solid board
  • Webbing a slip seat frame for a boxed base
  • Constructing and applying a box cushion top
  • Making and applying welt on top and bottom edges
  • Achieving clean, even pull-over fabric tension
  • Squaring and finishing corners on both seat styles
  • Selecting the right materials for flat vs. boxed seats

What to Bring

Each student will have use of a worktable, staple gun, and a sewing kit — all provided. Foam, webbing, and other build materials are also provided. Workroom Tech provides stock fabric, or you may choose to bring your own fabric — details on yardage will be provided upon registration.

Note: Students are encouraged to bring their own fabric scissors. If you do, be sure to comply with all travel regulations regarding carry-on versus checked bags.
